Of course, I didn't just post because I wanted to make an announcement (especially because almost everyone who reads this thing has either heard it from me already or saw the change on Facebook). No, I posted because thinking about my spring semester and planning a new and improved future is the only thing I have going for me (school-wise) right now. What do I do when I'm supposed to be listening to a lecture on shear deformation in structures? I imagine myself 10 years from now writing for a magazine during the day and writing a novel at night in the company of my two cats Bianca and Brooklyn. When I'm building a bridge for studio my hands may be super-glued to the truss members but my mind is in Intro To Creative Writing: Prose. And when I'm supposed to be learning all about arrays and data types so I can fail another computer science test I'm instead divulging all the details of my decision to forsake the College of Architecture.
To be an Environmental Design major (and, I suspect, any other major as well) you have to be just a little bit proud of what you produce. You have to be confident in your ability to really be successful in your field. In short, to be an ENDS major you have to know that your designs are better than everyone else's. The biggest problem that I had with being an ENDS major was that I never thought that my designs were the best. They were always kind of plain and simple and boring and I was ready to trash them and make room in attic for more junk at 2:14 on the glorious Friday afternoon that I became an English major.
Now I'm on the creative writing track and I know that's where I need to be because I know I can write. I'm minoring in spanish because I know I can speak and understand it better than many of my fellow gringos. I know I can do these things in the same way that my viz track boyfriend knows he can make 3D models and in the same way that my electrical engineering brother knows he can rewire a television and in the same way that my elementary education friend knows she has the saintly patience required to teach little kids. It's not vanity, it's being self-aware.
I started reading chapter books in kindergarten, I wrote my first short story when I was 8 years old, I was gawked at in elementary school for having my nose in a book when I walked home from the bus stop, I typed a 16-page novel in 9th grade, I corrected more "Me and Bob went to the store"s than I probably should have, and I bite my tongue every time I read misused "your" vs. "you're"s. Two of my three goals in life are directly related to my new major and minor (publish a book and be fluent in spanish) and you can bet that the third one has nothing to do with being a graphic designer.
Ironically, when I was in high school I had every intention of majoring in English until I hit the brick wall that was AP English 3. That same year I took a web mastering class (and was subsequently introduced to Photoshop) and heard about Environmental Design when I visited A&M for the first time and the viz track sounded like a very fair alternative to the horror that (at the time) was English. But when I got here I quickly realized that the class that I missed the most from high school was English. I waxed nostalgic about AP English 4 for the first 3 months of college but accepted my place in the College of Architecture anyway.
When I was an ENDS major people automatically assumed that I was really artistic (laughable). Now when I tell people that I am ENGL major they may correctly assume that I a) like to read, b) like to write, and/or c) like to correct grammar mistakes with the same fiery conviction of a born-again Baptist minister on Sunday morning.
When I was an ENDS major I didn't want to think about the internship that I was going to have to face a year from now. I didn't like to think about where I'd be after I graduated. I could see myself enduring a job during the day and writing when I got home. I'd thought about working in graphic design for a few years and then going back to school to get my English degree. And then, after the slightest nudge from my mom, I realized that that was probably the stupidest idea I'd ever had in my life. I was really dreading the direction in which my old life was heading. I didn't want to grow up and leave school because my only prospect was a minimally enjoyable graphic design career. Now I'm excited about graduating! I'm excited to work for a magazine and to try to publish a novel and now I will proudly proclaim to anyone who asks me what I plan on doing with my degree, "I'm going to be a writer!".
Gosh I must really have it in for my GPA. Either that or I just hate programming. Yeah, that last one.

Most visited webpage?
http://www.weightwatchers.com/! I'm sort of obsessed with it (but not in a "dear, if I checked your knuckles after dinner would I find abrasions?" way...it's more of an "if I had a million dollars and a friend who's diet food tolerance matched mine I would try every 1-5 Point recipe on this site!" obsession).

If you get a chance, you should search for me in the A&M directory. I almost kissed my monitor when I saw what my major was listed as. Of course, this was after I'd gotten 3 e-mails from my new advisor. These 4.5 months might be the worst of my life, but at least there's a big stack of literature waiting to be analyzed and emulated at the end of the tunnel.

After a few horrible weeks of being stuck around 1**lbs I've finally started losing weight again, so witness the reintroduction of Portly Polly! I'm sure I won't post Polly as religiously as I did over the summer, and really the only reason I've posted her today is that I'm thrilled that I only have 13.3 pounds left to lose (I'm also now in a brand new weight range. Numbers showed up on the scale this morning that I hadn't seen since I was a shorter and chubbier middle schooler). Anyway, woo!

- I just watched 2 episodes of Mythbusters
- Coke Zero tastes just like regular Coke
- I'm running errands tomorrow
- Snow Patrol and The Fray kick a- (Run and How To Save A Life, seriously)
- "Tejer" is spanish for "to knit" (and "bufanda" is spanish for "scarf")
- Effing Grey's Anatomy and CSI tomorrow night

P.S. Apologies, I've just spent the past 3 hours teaching myself about logical operators and do loops (did you know that the value of !x && y && z-1 when x=2, y=3, and z=6 is 0? Did you care? Neither did I.) so you'll understand that my nerves are a little frayed.

How come I always wind up hating my major during fall semesters? Last year I was so fed up with it that I was thisclose to changing it and now I'm wondering what could have possibly been so magical about last spring that made me decide to stick with it. Admittedly, political science would have been a terrible choice, but the "I love watching the news so I'd enjoy poli sci" rationale was ridiculous anyway. I can, however, properly justify wanting to be an English/Spanish major - I've enjoyed reading since kindergarten, the best thing about this semester so far has been writing a report on Fallingwater, I love correcting grammar of both the english and spanish persuasions, and when I saw the word "estare" on my spanish phrase calendar this morning my little heart fluttered with future tense entusiasmo. Seriously, I can form eloquent english sentences with the best of them y sabes lo que yo estoy escribiendo? Puedes leerlo sin pensando? No? Yo puedo. Puedo porque espanol no es complicada para mi. He aprendido mucha de la lengua y si no la use, olvidare. Ten hours of combined english and spanish AP credit and yet when I talk to people about my major I have to correct them when they assume that I am artistic. Confound much?
Ignore this, I'm full of crap.

I'm enjoying fall more this year than I ever have before (ok, technically it's still summer but it doesn't really feel like summer that much anymore so I'm going to take all the "fall" that I can get). I really want to go to New Mexico but that won't be possible until spring break so um, camping anyone!? Seriously.

- I got an email yesterday saying that the architecture history class that I was supposed to take this semester has been cancelled and good luck finding a replacement three days before school starts. Luckily, I signed up for Pilates on a whim during registration so I still have 12 hours (and am still a full-time student) but now I feel like a supreme slacker. I tried to find a replacement class but the only other ones that I could possibly take are full. I mean, I guess if I was super desperate I could take a soil microbiology class, but I think I'd rather find contentment with my 12 hours.
- I need an envelope to mail my juror exemption form back to the state. I got a jury summons the week after I moved back to the Station and now I can't serve because I am "enrolled and in actual attendance at a high school or college". Boo! Why couldn't it have come two months before I moved back? I could have been a juror! I could have been involved in a law case! I could have been tempted to change my major again!
- I've decided that one day I will have my own house/apartment and my own ornery cat. Although, I'm afraid that once I get accustomed to that lifestyle I'll never want to give it up and then it will be so long, prospect of marriage! Of course, I am only 19.

This summer I:
- Got an A in Physics
- Earned a really pretty penny in roughly 9 weeks
- Corrected my tongue thrust
- Lost almost 25lbs
Plus started a college scrapbook, got a really nice tan, and whitened my teeth.
In high school I resented busy summers because I thought they completely defeated the purpose of having a break at all. To a large extent that is true - once you reach a certain age (16ish I suppose) summer becomes less of a period of relaxation and more of an opportunity to do all of the crap that you couldn't get done during school. For instance - there's no way I could have gotten an A in Physics while at A&M, and there's no way I could have worked and been an ENDS major at the same time. From now on, summers will all probably be similar to the one that just (graciously) ended, and I guess that's ok since I didn't have anything better to do this summer anyway. Thankfully I spend more time enjoying myself in school than I do moping through May, June, and July. Now I just wish people would stop referring to the "lazy days of summer", etc. because those only exist for the unemployable.
So for the record, this was the definitive summer from hell. This summer is the base unit. It is the meter, the gram, and the liter. Could next summer be better? Absolutely. I might intern, I might live in the Station, I'll probably go on a nice vacation with my family. That would be the centi-summer from hell. Could a future summer be worse? Of course. I might die (the kilo-summer from hell). However, no matter how much I hated this summer, I can't complain about successfully BSing my way through 6 weeks of Physics, being able to afford almost anything, finally resting with my mouth closed, and throwing away 2 sizes of fat clothes.
Oh P.S. I lost .2lbs this past week but I didn't post Polly because a loss like that wouldn't really register.
